MAY 8, 2012 COLTSFOOT
"A friend accepts us as we are .. yet helps us to be what we should."
If you have a friend, he/she should accept for you for what you are. This should be in good and bad times. You always know who your friends are in times of need. I do have a friend who helps me to be what I should be- but this type of friend is rare. I also can tell him how he should be. It is a give and take relationship. That is how a friendship should be.
I do not want to say that friends come and go, but it is true ---it happens. Sometimes you just grow apart. What you thought friendship would be - is not exactly what you would have expected. The older I get, the more I begin to understand all relationships in life. I see it first hand- between husbands and wives, husbands and husbands, mother and children, sibling and sibling, and even wife and wife. So many of my friends have asked how I am doing while my husband has been under the weather. Now that is friendship.
In the Family Astreraceae there are many plants and flowers. How could you not like this family of plants. Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) is one of my favorite plants. It has been called many other names such as Horsehoff or horse foot. The name I like which describes its use is coughfoot. And the name I do not like is ass's foot. It does have hoof-shaped leaves so I can understand that name. The ass's foot makes no sense to me.
The renowned herbalist Culpepper described it as, "...this plant is under Venus. The fresh leaves or juice or a syrup made thereof, is good for a hot dry cough, for wheeziness and shortness of breath."
It has been used as an expectorant for a cough, used in astham and "old' or chronic bronchitis. Someone told me that English Tobacco has as its first ingredient- coltsfoot. I did not know that and will have to see when in England again. I smoked tobacco as a medical student in England but paid little attention to the ingredients.
Coltsfoot is very popular in Europe compared to the United States. It has proven useful for chronic emphysema and silicosis. In Europe they use as a chest tea. I think here we go for ginger and elderberry for coughs first, but I do prefer coltsfoot. There were repoprts of carcinogenic compounds found in this plant, but I ignored this after reading the literature. The way I look at this - If you look hard enough you can find bad in just about everything, including nature. The amount of carcinogens in this plant is so minimal it is not even worth writing about it.
Another little tidbit of information I did not know is that a replica of 'coltsfoot' was placed above Parisian Pharmacies to solidify the effectiveness of the medicines in the pharmacy. This is a nice touch for pharmacies.
I used to confuse this Coltsfoot with Dandelions, but now I know the difference. You can see both coltsfoot and dandelions in the general lawns of your neighbors. You can tell the difference by the shape of the leaves. The leaves of coltsfoot are thick and used as a mucilage as is Slippery Elm.

JULY 30, 2011 COLTSFOOT AND COUGH

When self control and self esteem are intact, you will experience greater freedom. Freedom from what? Freedom to be your own self. Freedom to be the person you always wanted to be. When you boost your self-esteem through a hobby you develop a new freedom. You have reached another level in your life. This new hobby whether watercolor painting, puzzles, lego building, bee keeping, knitting, pottery and even butterfly watching starts you on a path of self control and self awareness. These lead to acceptance.
How often do you get a cough? Is it due to bronchitis, a respiratory allergen, environmental toxicity or 2nd hand smoke? It could be congestion from bacteria or virus that is causing the congestion of your lungs. We treat too many individuals with antibiotics who in actuality do not need these prescriptions. If you remove the infection, the physician has to find the underlying problem. The physician needs to be an investigator. The physician needs to be Sherlock Holmes.
The physician needs to practice and do a more through bedside examination. One factor the physician should discuss is the dietary lifestyle. The physician should be asking about dairy ingestion as this leads to mucous production which then can lead to infection or congestion. It is essential for the patient to have a diet low in mucous forming foods. Inherently there is nothing wrong with mucous , but excess is always a problem. Foods which are mucous producing are the following:
1. Dairy - includes goat and yogurt
2. Gluten grains - B, R, O, W - barley, rye oats and wheat; excluded is steel cut oatmeal
3. Starchy root vegetables as potatoes, turnips
Replace #1-3 above with fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants and low in sugar. For example this would be a diet rich in all berries and green leafy vegetables.I would rather treat a cough with herbal remedies. It is easy for me to use ginger or elderberry cough syrup which are commercially available. As an herbalist I have my favorite cough remedies. I do love Elderberry. There is one remedy that I have seen other herbalists use with success. It has a pleasing taste to the patient too. I feel this is just as important as the efficacy. No patient will take an herbal mixture that causes them to gag. However I will tell you that the worst tasting herbs have major potential for efficacy and healing.
The cough remedy are equal parts of the following:
1. Coltsfoot - SEE PHOTOGRAPH ABOVE; Do not think coltsfoot is dandelion IT IS NOT
2. Mullein - Remember this is used in earaches
3. Liquorice
You can take the above tea every 3 hours if time permits or minimum of 3 cups per day.
Until tomorrow...

OCTOBER 1, 2010 THE MUSIC OF THE SOUL

"Words make you think a thought. Music makes you feel a feeling. A song makes you feel a thought.”
E.Y. Harburg
“Music is a fair and glorious gift from God. I am strongly persuaded that after theology there is no art than can be placed on a level with music; for besides theology, music is the only art capable of affording peace and joy of the heart.”
Martin Luther
"Music is so important. It changes thinking, it influences everybody, whether they know it or not. Music knows no boundary lines."
Irving Berlin
“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything; It is the essence of order and lends to all that is good, just, and beautiful.”
Plato
Which quote resonates with you? The composer/lyricist, the ancient philosopher or the humanitarian/civil rights leader all talk about music in different ways. I love them all.
I believe that every happy moment and every disappointment has a song. Listen to the lyrics of certain songs. Have the melody and the music humming in your mind. Sometimes the lyrics of a song will help you grasp the true nature of your pain. I am sure you have heard that each of us have right brain and left brain functions. The left brain is for the logical and rational ability. The right and left brain work with each other. The left brain can only add onto existing structures. All of us depend on our left brain especially when we are faced with problems. The right brain is the part of your brain where you get sudden clarity of a situation, insights into the problems, and realizations that you are not the problem. The right brain is silent unlike the left brain.
The right brain remembers a part of the dream, remembers a name when it has slipped from you, and comforts you with the music that is in your soul.
I have used different types of herbs for cough. One of those herbs is ginger. The other is Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara).
Coltsfoot is a member of the daisy family. Maybe this is why I like it so much . Both the flowers and the leaves are used. The Coltsfoot herb is also know as Assfoot, Coughwort, Horsehoof, British Tobacco, Bullsfoot, and Fieldhove. Coltsfoot herb is a perennial that looks a lot like a dandelion. It is a common wild plant and grows to the height of 4 to 10 inches. It has long hoof shaped leaves (some describe them as kidney shaped) and light yellow flowers. You will commonly find this plant along roadsides and in open areas. I know I have photos of Coltfoot from Ithaca. It is native to Europe and Asia, but has become naturalized in North America.
This herb is traditionally used in the form of tea, but also appears in over-the-counter formulas for colds and congestion. It contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can seriously damage the liver and one study concluded that the flower buds are carcinogenic. Due to these alkaloids the governing bodies consider it very unsafe. In Europe and the United States, many practitioners still use the Coltsfoot herb routinely on a short term basis to treat coughs and other respiratory ailments.
I have used it only for coughs and bronchitis, but I do know some herbalists who have used it for whoopping cough ( pertussis). Externally it can be applied to the skin for the treatment of burns. Coltsfoot has many actions: Expectorant, demulcent, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic anti-tussive, tonic, and anti-catarrhal.
I have combined it with mullein for the treatment of coughs and with echinacea for bronchitis.

COME RAIN OR COME SHINE -
Harold Arlen/ Johnny Mercer
I'm gonna love you, like nobody's loved you
Come rain or come shine
High as a mountain, deep as a river
Come rain or come shine
I guess when you met me
It was just one of those things
But don't you ever bet me
'Cause I'm gonna be true if you let me
You're gonna love me, like nobody's loved me
Come rain or come shine
We'll be happy together, unhappy together
Now won't that be just fine
The days may be cloudy or sunny
We're in or out of the money
But I'm with you always
I'm with you rain or shine
