SEPTEMBER 28, 2012 TIME

" TIME is a flowing river. Happy are those who allow themselves to be carried, unresisting with the current. They float through easy days. The live, unquestioning in the moment. " Christopher Morley

The next days ahead will be a flowing river. We will be carried by the light. There are two books I read that have the number, 100 in the title. These are " 100 Places To Visit before you Die." and 100 Quiet and Serene places in New York City.

I have regrets that there are places I have not visited. Rick and I still have time. As we looked at the first book, there are places we each have never been to. As we looked through the second book on peaceful places in New York City, we are trying to go to each of those places. The place we have chosen or rather chosen for us to visit in the next 10 days is in neither of these books. It is the country of Romania. We will be landing in Cluj and traveling to Transylvania.

Yes I said Transylvania. it is a place neither of us have been, nor in my wildest dreams would I have thought I would visit. It is a gift.  I often think my time is not valuable unless I am doing something useful

Some of this time has been spent doing my hobbies which includes needle crafting, card making, beekeeping and much more. Rick and I need time. Time off to be serene and quiet and to explore. Time does heal all hurt and pain. All things shall pass

Nature shows us that morning follows night. We shall see what morning and night has to offer in Romania.
There will be beauty, compassion and love there. It will be a long flight. I do not do well on long flights. So I have decided to do what I know best on a flight.-Needle point, knitting and reading. Being who I am- I can't settle ON just one of each. I will bring three new needle points, 3-4 books and much yarn.
I do not want to read medicine so I have the following:

1. The Life of Pi
2. Miracle of Mind fullness
3. That Woman : Life of the Duchess of Windsor
4. The Sacred and the Profane

The last book is by a Romanian, Mircea Eliade. It was originally written in 1954. It is about an exciting introduction to religion. Mircea was   the chairman of the department of the history of religions at the University of Chicago. He has written many books. It was suggested by a patient, Mr A. whom knew we were going to Romania. Perhaps I will find more about what Mr Eliade means by visiting his country of birth.

Until tomorrow..

SEPTEMBER 27, 2012 INFLAMMATION

" There is nothing like a dream to create the future ." Victor Hugo

A dream can become a reality. You have to believe. You have to see the light of life. Some say " Dream if you are feeling blue.. that is the right thing to do...." I often sit and daydream . Over gluten free pizza at Palas  on Tuesday with friends.  That night ,  I dreamed that a special friend's book would soon be done. I went home that night and my prayers and the following morning meditation were about this dream. It will soon be a reality. How powerful can meditation and prayer be? As much as you believe, but you first must do it !

Curcumin is a potent anti oxidant from tumeric, a herb or traditional spice. It is often used in Middle Eastern cooking. Curcumin has potent anti-inflammatory and chemoprotective activities. It is currently being studied by the National Institute of Health ( NIH) Numerous studies have shown that curcumin has strong NFkB inhibiting properties. This NFkB plays a crucial role on many chronic inflammatory conditions, especially the gastrointestinal conditions, as colitis, ulcerative colitis, andf Celiac Disease. The NFkB is strongly associated with cell death and including the expression of other mediators as COX-2 and i NOS. Curcumin does also inhibit growth factor beta and fibrogenisis,. These good benefits have shown to be positive markers and assist in help with Crohn's Disease.
It has been used in studies to heal ulcers while reducing abdominal pain.
There is even a study that curcumin inhibits H. pylori infection and inflammation of the gastric mucosal cells.

The studies on curcumin have proven its benefits. I add it to every patients regimen who has inflammation. There are other herbs and supplements I would add including ginger, glutamine quercetin, skullcap root and even green tea.

Seek natural remedies for inflammation instead of always going to the local drug store and buying an over-the-counter anti inflammatory agent as Motrin, Alleve et al. These non steroidal over the counter class can cause many other problems.

Try the natural way !!

SEPTEMBER 26, 2012 Apo E GENE

" Blessed are those who give without remembering. And blessed are those who take without forgetting."

The ApoE ( or apolipoprotein E) protein is found on chlymicrons and other lipoproteins particles. There are three different known varieties of the ApoE gene ( e2,e3,e4) and six combinations of expressions based on these two alleles. It is now known that the E3/E4 is associated with a higher incidence of atherosclerosis and the Apo E4/E4 is associated with a higher incidence of Alzheimer's Disease ( AD). Testing is straight forward if your doctor knows the right test to do. The test I have done when non covered and now covered by insurance is the Berkley Heart Laboratory Testing. The testing is straight forward - the following genotypes and their recommendations.

There are six possible Apo E genotypes

e2/e2
e3/e3
e4/e4
e2/e3
e3/e4
e2/e4

1. e3/e3 or e2/e4     e3 is considered normal with no associated risk factors

e3/e3 is the most common genotype (60% of the general population

2. e2/e2 or e2/e3      e2 carriers with high cholesterol and TG respond to 'statin' therapy

These carriers do not respond to a low fat diet

e2 carriers have a positive response to drinking alcohol

e2 carriers have a low LDL but a high TG(triglyceride)

e2/e2 more than likely with develop a type III hyperlipoproteinemia

type III hyperlipoproteinemia has yellow plaques - xanthomas

3. e3/e4                       associated with high levels of LDL and TG

higher incidence of development of early cardiovascular disease -

may not respond to 'conventional' statin therapy

may do well with a low - fat diet

4. e4/e4                        higher incidence for the development of Alzheimer's Disease/Dementia

So what does all this mean ? It means ask your doctor for the Berkley Heart Lab Test. Secondly read this book,  ApoE Gene Diet, by Friend and fellow graduate from Integrative Medicine, Pamela McDonald.
www.apoegenediet.com Once you find our what ApoE gene you are you can follow a specific dietary protocol.

Until tomorrow...

SEPTEMBER , 25, 2012 IMPROVE YOUR ENERGY

" Life is not merely being alive, but being well." ---Marcus Valerius Marrtialis

Who wants to be alive in this wonderful Earth Mother, but not well. You must be well to enjoy the life around you. Ralph Waldo Emerson stated , " Make the most of yourself, for that is all there is of you," and James Leigh Hunt stated, " The groundwork of all happiness is health." Your own health is the key to happiness.
So you want to be happy and tired ? NO. You want to be alive and have energy If you want energy, then start eating better, exercising more, hydrating yourself with water and take some very important supplements.

There are very few supplements therapies that have ever shown to increase or boost energy. These few supplements have a profound effect on the tissues they target. One of the most useful supplements is D- ribose with or without carnitine. Ribose is a unique and powerful addition to any regimen. I prefer to use D ribose as a powder or a liquid. There are few companies that combine in liquid D ribose and L carnitine.
There is a great way to dramatically improve your energy production. You must continue this regimen for at least 8 weeks ( the range is 6 - 12 weeks)
These are:
1. D ribose - 1 scoop is 5 grams - minimal 1 scoop once  a day to titrated up to 5 grams 3 times a day

2. L carnitine - 2500mg per day up to 5,000 per day

3. Coenzyme Q 10 - the minimal is 200mg to 400mg. Studies recommend taking with a fatty meal. We use a variety of coenzyme Q10 preparations, Recently we have been using a gel chewable Coenzyme Q10- 300mg/day

4. Magnesium ( I prefer magnesium taurate) 200mg/day

5. B complex- either can be either  B50 or B100. I would use a methylated version of B12 and folic acid as there are a percentage of patients who have a mutation and need the methylated form.

6. Some suggest acetyl L carnitine- I use this for the brain rather than l carnitine for heart and muscle. Some use 500mg twice a day for at least 6 weeks. To be honest I rather use L carnitine.

Until tomorrow....

SEPTEMBER 24, 2012 PROLOTHERAPY

"If there's a book you really want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it.
--Toni Morrison

In way I am writng my own book through this blog. It is me. It discusses personal issues which I feel are important not only myself, but a good reflection on how you heal yourself. I am due to write another book--I just do not know what.  There are so many topics that flood  through my mind, but I haven't decided on one yet . With prayer and meditation I wil find the answer

Do you know what prolotherapy is ?  Prolotherapy addresses connective tissue weakness or instability. This is alternative to orthopedic steroid injections. The use of lidcaine, calcium gluconate or sometimes glucose, injections are administered by a pain mangement physician. It is way to strengthen the ligaments and tendons. The substances injected cause inflammation of the area. These substances are calcium gluconate, or glucose, with and without lidocaine.  Inflammation heals inflammation. Prolotherapy is useful for all areas of the body - knees, albows, cervical neck, and especially back. I have used prolotherapy for herniated discs on my lower back.
Before I recommend prolotherapy to our own pain management physican, Dr Alfredo Castillo or to other Centers as the Ostrow Pain Management Center with Dr Ostrow or Dr Juehl,  I need to make sure the patient has an adequate diet, no malabsorbtion issues, and possible undetected celiac disease and  non celiac gluten sensitivity. If these patients especially, I must correct their villi which were once a shag (villi) rug.The shag rug villi allows the patient to absorb, make Vitamin D and to make serotonin. Most pateints have some mabasorbtion issues whether due to food alllergies/sensitivites, underlying parasites, or even metal toxicity( acute if in the blood) or chronic which  represents a 6 hour collection ( a relfection of the  tissue)
Why is defciiency so important ?Many of these micronutrient that would deficient in celiac or non celiac gluten insensitivity and intolerance ) would be zinc, copper, manganese, protein and Vitamin C. These micronutruients are so important for making and maintaining of collagen.
We do know that any protein deficiency is always known to delay wound healing. A protein defciency has been known to hasten healing It is so impoortant to make sure you have more than the daily recommended allowance for protein,.  The RDA is 0.8 grams/kg of body weight. In order individuals it should be a larger amount. For someoen who weigh about 70ks (154 lbs) to meet the RDA requiremnents ypu would have comsune 1 egg, 5 ounces of wualoity tuna,3 ounces of meat or pultry. One egg is7 grams of  protein, the 5 ounces of good tuna equals 28 graims of protein and 3 ounces of meat or poultry is 21 grams of protein
This needs to be higher for the older patient who needs to heal. For older patients this is where I use protein shakes with low glycemic index, high protein and usually if not always either Brown Rice, Pea Protein, or Hemp protein. The one thing about a protein drinks the amount of zinc. The amount in a protein shake is usually inadequate so many need to talke extra zinc, espceically men

The regular trace elemnts over the counter are not always adequate. I usually recommend 20- 30 grams of zinc,, 5mg of manganese and at least and 1 gram of copper prior to prolotherapy.

Find  the best prolotherapy  therapist in your area. It does make a difference.

Until tomorrow...

SEPTEMBER 21, 2012 YOUR NICHE

"Feel your aliveness, your strength, your flow and your desires "

Through meditation and prayer you can center yourself  and enter into the most sacred places within yourself. You will bring awareness to what you want to do in life. It will be magical. This will play a role in your life- so you move through it and into the fullness of your life.

Have you found your place in life? Do you have certain ' niche' ? Do you think you are where you should be at this time in your life ? These are all questions we ask ourselves in our lifetime . I have asked  myself these questions many times. For today, I am happy where I am. I am serene and calm these days. I am sure prayer/meditation, self esteemable hobbies and continued learning has a lot to do with it. I also know when you have the love and support of a partner , it does make life easier.

I have a 'niche' - Healing. I always knew I wanted to heal. In retrospect, I wanted to be a veterinarian when I finished college. I did not get into a vet school. I went to medical school. I am not unhappy with that decision as it was a G.O.D. given , but I was dismayed with the medical treatment of patients. I sought after more answers. These I found in Integrative Medicine and Botanical Medicine.

After reading my son's blog and viewing his pictures from Belize where he volunteered at the Belize Zoo and Primate and Manatee Rehabilitation,  I wanted to learn more about Spider Monkeys. I have always been interested in primates. During college I worked with Primates with a college friend

Spider monkeys of the genus Ateles are New World monkeys in the subfamily Atelinae, family Atelidae. Like other atelines, they are found in tropical forests of Central and South America, from southern Mexico to Brazil. The genus contains seven species, all of which are under threat; the black-headed spider monkey and brown spider monkey are critically endangered. Their disproportionately long limbs and long prehensile tails make them one of the largest New World monkeys and gives rise to their common name. Spider monkeys live in the upper layers of the rainforest, and forage in the high canopy, from 25 to 30 m (82 to 98 ft) They primarily eat fruits, but will also occasionally consume leaves, flowers, and insects. I saw photos of Gregory preparing the food for the spider monkey.  Due to their large size, spider monkeys require large tracts of moist evergreen forests, and prefer undisturbed primary rainforest. They are social animals and live in bands of up to 35 individuals but will split up to forage during the day

From the pictures above, it seems clear to me there is happiness and serenity. There is no fear. There is a connection. Perhaps energetically there is a bond. It seems to us the 'niche' has been found. After viewing those photos, I would love to have a spider monkey as a pet. There is much controversy in keeping spider monkeys as pets. In addition I do not know enough about the monkey nor the legality in New York State. I know one day we will be visiting Gregory in  a remote place where he cares and studies Primates.

SEPTEMBER 20, 2012 SUGAR CRAVINGS

" When you give up your resistance to human limitations, only then will you have your full potential available to create and to build."

We are created human. We have some limitations. I as a doctor have human limitations. When I realize these character defects or personality traits and have the true ability to let go--then I will live to my fullest and greatest potential. This can take years, but it must be done. If not, you might be anxious, miserable and unhappy. The happiness , serenity and peace is found within.

Do you crave sugar ? What kind of sugar ? Is it candy, sweets, ice cream or do you crave carbohydrates?
For those that have sugar cravings you need to pay better attention with the Glycemic Index. This ranks carbohydrate rich foods for their effect on blood glucose levels.  This is not the perfect way, and not infallible but it is a guide for the beginner to start understanding food choices

Foods to AVOID include those rich in easily digested starches or sugars. You know these foods, but let me give you some guidance
Foods to AVOID are:
1. White bread
2. Whole grain bread
3. Gluten free processed foods ( are high in sugar)
4. Standard pastas
5. Chips
6. Pancakes or waffles
7. White potatoes
8. Watermelon
9. Fruit juices
10. Most high sugar fruits
11. Pizza
12. Sugar in any form

There are hundreds of low glycemic index foods that await your palate. these are all berries, beans, non starchy vegetables, (kale, collards, bok choy, broccoli, squash, tomatoes) Nuts are also a great source. NO peanuts as these are legumes not tree nuts.

Everyone needs a little education on foods and food choices. This is just a start for beginners.
Be careful what you read. No diet can be followed by a book.
Remember

You Are What You Eat !

Until tomorrow...

SEPTEMBER 19, 2012 HOMOCYSTEINE

" Sit loosely in the saddle of life." - Robert Louis Stevenson

Do not be too serious in life. Life is too short. Enjoy every moment you have with yourself and loved ones.

What is homocysteine ? Homocyteine is an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, stroke, osteoporosis and several neurodegenerative diseases., In diabetics, homocysteine adds a significant burden, especially in those with poorly controlled blood glucose. Homocysteine levels below 6 umol/L are to be ideal. and moderate risk begins when levels are between 9 - 13 umol/L/. Levels above 13 are associated with and may be seen in kidney diseases.

These are the factors causing Hyperhomocysteinemia:
1. increased age; 2. male gender ; 3. menopause
A diet low in consumption of fruits and vegetables, no consumption of multivitamins, low intake of folic acid, vitamin B6 and vitamin B12 and a diet high in methionine containing proteins.

So you do not get panicked--there are diseases with higher homocysteine levels., These are diabetes, kidney diseases, certain malignancies, rheumatoid arthritis, hypothyroidism, psoriasis, and enzxyme deficiencies as methionine synthetase.

I have mentioned methionine twice so there are metabolic pathways concerting homnocysteine to either cysteine and/ or methionine ( 2 other amino acids) It is straight forward in reducing homocysteine levels. You do this by increasing the intake of folates, Vitamin B12 and Vitamin B6

B12 is by far the most studied single ingredient to reduce homocysteine. I prefer to use a methylated folic acid as there is a very common enzyme deficiency (5  MTHFR) A methylated folic acid is more beneficial. If you cannot get a methylated folic acid, then you can use TMG ( trimethylglycine) as it is a methyl donor and an alternative substrate for converting homocysteine to methionine.

There are some drugs that can also increase homocysteine as metformin ( glucophage for diabetes) niacin, theophylline ( for asthma () and estrogens ( as in birth control) There are others but these are just a few.

Until tomorrrow...

Remember start eating greens...

SEPTEMBER 18, 2012 HERBS IN THE MINT FAMILY

" Take time for silence to receicve the power it gives in your life."

Do you ever take a moment of silence ? I have but these moments have been rare in my past. I have been learning to do this on a daily basis. It does make a difference. Last Monday at a Funeral Mass I sat silently and cried. I needed this so badly in my life. Over the weekend, I heard that someone I knew took their life. I sat and cried silently. Silence, prayer and meditation gives me the pwoer to carry on through the good and bad times.

Most herbalists discuss remedies for the under active thyroid, but today I want to discuss hyperthyroidism (over active).  The fatigue, low body temperature, weight gain, depression, heat or cold intolerance (usually cold), and hair loss are symptoms of a thyroid which is under active (an under active thyroid has thyroid stimulating hormone levels greater than 4.0) You can also have hair loss and fatigue with an overactive thyroid.

With an overactive thyroid, the most important clinical aspect is to control the cardiovascular signs and symptoms such as an overactive heart rate (pulse rate) and an elevated blood pressure. Unfortunately not many herbalists deal with hyperthyroid conditions. I get many patients who have been told by other doctors dealing with their overactive thyroid, "You have two options- radioactive iodine to destroy the thyroid or surgical remove the thyroid, thus you will be on medications for the rest of your life." There is even a medication to slow down your thyroid in addition to the well documented beta blockers.

Although these are two conventional methods still used today, the use of some natural herbs in high doses can reverse and/or cool down the hyperactive thyroid.

I have seen patients respond within a few months, some within a year and rarely beyond two years unless the presenting hyperthyroidism is very severe. Harvey W. Felter, ecletic physician, wrote this about bugleweed, "...used for vascular excitement with rapid, tumultuous action of the heart, but lacking power." I love to read old uses of herbs. I especially enjoy Culpepper and Sauer.

Bugleweed, ( Lycopus virginicus )can be used for both hypothyroid and hyperthyroid. It has been shown to reduce thyroid levels in hyperthyroid animals. The dose is high - about 150 drops of a 1:3 extract. The aerial parts of the plant are used. Bugleweed is specific for the over-active thyroid where the symptoms include tightness of breath, shaking and palpitations. For the wild crafter it should be collected just before the buds open. It is a great nervine and I have used it with valerian. I also have used this herb with other cardio tonic herbs for slowing down the heart rate.

Another herb, Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis) helps in decreasing anxiety and calming an overactive thyroid. I use both lemon balm and bugleweed together. In animal studies, lemon balm has been shown to reduce or normalize the TSH levels. It is given at 45 drops of a 1:3 extract. I love the plant family that lemon balm belongs to --Lamiaceae . This is the same family for the all the mint plants. There is no history for use of lemon balm in thyroid diseases, but I have seen other herbalists use it, and I have also used it with good success. Other than its thyroid use, lemon balm is antiviral especially herpes simplex. There has been new exciting studies for its use in Alzheimer's Disease.

I love the Mint Family...Another herb I use with the two above mint family herbs is another in the same family- This is Motherwort. I usually use Motherwort for the arrhythmia's associated with hyperthyroidism.

SEPTEMBER 17, 2012 SIBERIAN RHUBARB

" Be a student of life . We can learn only if we open our minds to our teachers."

I plan to be a student for life. I love learning . I have opened my mind to my botanical mentor, 7song and 'things' began to happen. It has allowed me to use plants medicinally, but also intuitively. It allowed me to write blogs, and reinvent myself. It has allowed me to be passionate about Earth Mother. This is why I help the honeybee population. It has allowed to me to join United Plant Savers and the American Botanical Council. I am currently set up for my classes/degrees for 2013
NEVER STOP LEARNING !

I meet many women who start to have menopausal symptoms before the actual menopause and sometimes can last up to five years. This can impact the daily life of the woman. Some of these symptoms could be hot flashes, night sweats, and even depression. For some women, the choice is easier- hormonal therapy. I do offer hormonal therapy, but it is Bio identical Natural Hormonal replacement. For those that do not want any hormones, I can offer a few herbal remedies as chasteberry, lady mantle and many other herbs. Black cohash does offer some relief and has a good safety marguis. There are also good studies on this herb.

Recently a new herb emerged int he use of post menopausal symptoms. This is the extract of Siberian rhubarb ( Rheum rhaponticum L ) This product has been known as ERr 731 since the 1990's. It has been demonstrated that 4mg daily offers significant relief from menopausal symptoms versus placebo.

Despite the name ERr 731 - IT DOES NOT CONTAIN ANY FORM OF ESTROGEN.

I have great clinical data of those women whom have taken ERr 731. Hot flashes also known as hot flushes do impact daily work in an active female. I didn't mention the poor concentration, fatigue and memory decline can be directly correlated to the number and severity of hot flashes.  40% of women get physical and mental exhaustion. Today, forgetfulness is a reported symptoms.

This type of rhubarb is not be confused with the garden variety that is used as a laxative. The Chinese and the Indian rhubarbs to contains a higher amount of tannins,. This is not present int he Siberian rhubarb These other rhubarbs also contain anthraquiones which are less present int he Siberian form.

To be honest, the mechanism of this Siberian rhubarb is not completely understood. I believe that it is a multiple of reactions that synergistic work together to be effective.  It does appear to act as an  estrogen agonist. If female now have this choice- far fewer hormonal treatments- conventional versus bio identical would be used.
With its background studies it is made by Metagenics. The compound featuring ERr 731 is called ESTROVERA - by Metagenics - it CONTAINS NO ESTROGEN.

SEPTEMBER 14, 2012 LINUM OR FLAX

"Willpower is not the key to the way of life we are seeking, surrender is."

You might have the willpower not to eat gluten or chocolate again ( as with any other food, or addiction) but you must surrender. I hear the word willpower a lot, but an addiction is another way of stating " energy thief" Think about some of these addictions or energy thieves: coffee, sugar, chocolate, alcohol, cigarettes, sex,  vodka, work, family drama, lack of a loving relationship, exercise, dating services, iPhones et al.

Maybe flax seeds will be your next addiction after you read this...

And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid." LUKE 23:53(King James Version)

Flax (also known as common flax or linseed) (binomial name: Linum usitatissimum) is a member of the genus Linum in the family Linaceae. It is native to the region extending from the eastern Mediterranean to India and was probably first domesticated in the Fertile Crescent.
Most people consider Flax to be used for bowel issues (laxative) and to reduce cholesterol. I doubt you thought it is a flowering plant. I utilize Flax to help with colitis (I.B.S.), osteoarthritis and eczema. It is effective against autoimmune disorders, as well as multiple sclerosis and cancer. The studies of Flax include reduction in the bad cholsterol (LDL), reducing post eating glucose levels (called post prandial) and decreasing markers of inflammation (CRP, ESR). Why is it used in heart disease? Its high content of Alpha Linolenic Acids has made the ancient Flax seed become our modern miracle food. Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA) is a type of plant-derived Omega 3 fatty acid, similar to those found in fish like Salmon. Aside from alpha linolenic acid, flax seed is rich in lignan. Lignan is a type phytoestrogen (antioxidant) and also provides fiber. Researches reveal that lignan in Flax seed shows a lot of promise in fighting disease. The available forms of Flax in capsules, oil, powder and even soft gel. Some use the seeds and use 2 1/2 teaspoons ground twice a day. Every individual has a different dose. IMPORTANCE: Flax seed oil is not the same as Flax seeds. Flax seed oil is a concentrated source of ALA, which has been questioned for its potential association of increasing prostate cancer risk.

SEPTEMBER 13, 2012 BERRIES, BERRIES , BERRIES

" Teachers are everywhere. And as we become ready for a new lesson, one will appear."
There is no age limit to learn. There is never the wrong moment for a new life lesson. Through the years we all have experienced life lessons. Some might have come easy, and some have been hard. Some life lessons didn't help the first time, so we had to re experience and reenact them again ( and sometimes again) I feel I am here on Earth Mother to learn more life lessons. I also feel I need to gain as much knowledge as I can. The mind is always active and stimulating the mind with new materials is engaging and exciting.

Be a student to life !

When most individuals think of berries--Blueberries, Raspberries and Strawberries come to mind. I can understand why. The benefits of those berries are vast. As Fall approaches and Thanksgiving is near, start to thinking of Cranberries and Elderberries. I feel Cranberries are under-utilized during the rest of the year, except at Thanksgiving.

Cranberries are best known for their use against urinary tract infections especially of the species E. coli. Cranberries are the fighters of oxidative stress. These berries have also been useful in fending off ulcers created by the bacterium, Helicobacter Pylori (H.pylori). I find Cranberries to be tart but they are very useful.
Elderberries have a natural anti-viral activity. There are studies to show that Elderberries have been found to block H1H2 (Influenza) and the ability of the virus to infect host cells. Not only did Elderberry have its effect against H1H2, but 8-10 other influenza species.

So after all this berry talk, who still doesn't like berries? There are the all important Raspberries, Strawberries and Cherries. We didn't talk a lot about these but here it goes:
Raspberries have been useful in protection against colon cancer cells. Then there are choke berries, which are supposed to have a higher ORAC valve than the Acai berry. Strawberry in vitro studies have shown activity against certain cancers, whereas Cherries have shown to reduce lipid abnormalities. If you cut a Strawberry in half, use the white side to whiten your teeth. It does work.

Cherries have also been useful in reducing sugar levels. Many of these studies are not human studies. More double blind studies need to be done. There is definitely no harm in ingesting berries into your diet. All berries have a low glycemic index and a high antioxidant potential.

So eat, eat and eat BERRIES.

To finish let us read what Buddha has to say...

"Health is the greatest gift, contentment, the greatest wealth, faithfulness, the best relationship."

Until tomorrow...

SEPTEMBER 12, 2012 CINNAMON

Your actions are your only true belongings." Allan Lokos

Your actions belong only to you. You must take that responsibility. Remember the phrase, actions speak louder than words.  It is breaking apart the word 'reaction' and take away -re-...you have only the word action left. In order to grow physically, emotionally and mentally, you must take action. If you decide to sit and wait for things to happen, I do not know how long you will be sitting there. I do know that your action makes things happen !

As Fall is upon us, and Winter nearby- you should get used to having a cup of tea. On a cold day who doesn't want a cup of tea? Last night I felt stuffy so I had a cup of nettle tea. I love stinging nettles as an anti inflammatory tea! It was delicious with a 1/4 tsp of wild flower honey. This morning I have no stuffiness. I gain much information when I use a botanical for a patient for a specific condition. One herb, Cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylancium) has been used for centuries as a culinary herb, as well as for gastrointestinal disease. The conventional or allopathic community always wants studies, research and even sometimes double blind studies to show the efficacy and health benefits of an herb. While I find this important and necessary, I feel that a health care practitioner's clinical experience is important as well. Cinnamon has been one of the herbs that has recently been used more and more for diabetes. Although there are few human trials to study its efficacy, I have found it useful in controlling blood sugar levels as well as exerting a hypoglycemic control. I have relied on cinnamon alone to control blood sugar or glucose levels. I usually combine cinnamon with two or three other herbs, including Fenugeek, Rosemary and Gymnena. I also have had much success with three vita-nutrients in high doses. These are Chromium, Alpha Lipoic Acid and Vanadium. I always get asked "How much Cinnamon should I ingest on a daily basis?" There are studies with ineffective blood sugar control at doses of 1 to 1.5 grams daily, with positive or beneficial effects at dosages of 6 grams daily. I do not know if I like Cinnamon that much to ingest 6 grams unless I am using the method of delivery in capsules.

I also get asked "Is cinnamon only used for sugar control" The answer is NO. There are other studies to support the anti-inflammatory effects of certain Cinnamon plant species, especially C. cassia. There are also anti-bacterial effects against some species of bacteria. Since some studies also support the anti oxidant effect of Cinnamon, I use Cinnamon as a supportive treatment for patients with cancer and other infectious diseases, such as Lyme and HIV.

I have had success treating fungal infections with three herbs: Cinnamon, Thyme and Cloves. Oral thrush has been eliminated in 3 out of 5 patients using Cinnamon in a small study. I have seen some herbalist using Cinnamon for the eradication of H. Pylori. I myself have never had success with Cinnamon with H Pylori. I prefer to use Mastica if the patient cannot tolerate the conventional oral antibiotics.

In children, the use of warming spices as Cinnamon , Ginger and Cloves are an important treatment for chronic catarrh (excessive mucous production). I do find that not every child will like the taste of some of these herbs. In children, I encourage elimination of wheat and dairy to eliminate catarrh.

I do not think Mother Earth would have an abundance of plants just for us to look at their beauty. A Higher Power placed them here and allowed them to grow for a reason. I do not think we have discovered all the medicinal benefits of all the plants growing on earth.

A great review on different types of cinnamon appeared in this month of Herbalgram from the Amercian Botanical Council

SEPTEMBER 11, 2012 H THERAPY

"There comes a time when we feel we have done our BEST. When that time comes, Let it Go."

As Rick and I sat in the funeral mass of a dear friend, Patricia yesterday, I thought, "Did I do my best in the care of my friend?" I wasn't doubting myself, but made sure I was comfortable with her passing. No one is ever comfortable with one's passing. As the health care provider, I am never comfortable when a patient dies. When a patient dies, who has been part of my 'extended family',  I am deeply saddened. The best I did was to make sure she was comfortable in her final days. I cannot thank her friends, family and hospice enough  for doing what they know how to do best. I can ' let it go' NOW. This is just one example of letting it go.
" Letting Go" is a hard and difficult concept, but once learned it can be used over and over again.

A HEALING GARDEN. I know many herbalists that have such gardens. This is not a new field, but a different twist or concept. This is Horticulture Therapy. (HT) The definition of horticultural therapy is a process which uses plants, horticultural activities and the natural world to promote awareness and well being by improving the body, mind and spirit. Horticultural Therapy is universal, adaptable and validated by research. (Canadian Horticultural Therapy Associtaion 1997) The American Horticultural Therapy Association has different words but the same concept. At Cancer Centers of America in Philadelphia, the patients do work in their organic garden. It allows the patient to feel part of his/her therapy. This is done by gardening or collecting the organic vegetables that are served in the center's cafeteria.

Herbs and plants for centuries have been considered magical or mystical. In their own right, plants and herbs have been medicinal for those who choose. Plants are and will always be the basis for modern pharmaceutical science. That means any pharmaceutical drug that you consume was derived from a plant. Some people, as myself, are attracted to plants. Think about this--are you one of those individuals who glow when you see a bouquet of flowers? How do you feel walking in the woods or in Central Park? I am drawn to plants. Are you drawn to plants? This is the basis of Horticultural Therapy. We as a society mark significant days as Birthdays, Valentine's Day and even Christmas with plants and cultures. I do not know a single person that has not been attracted to plants or flowers at one time in their life. Then there are those, like me whose heart beats stronger, palms get sweaty and feel energized by plants. This is not an anxiety attack, but a spiritual awakening.

The research about HT is remarkable. HT can be a benefit to many individuals with a variety of diseases. Cancer patient as in the photo above can peer down into the heart of a dwarf juniper shrub before making the first cut. For this patient it is exhilarating. This is at a HT session in Chesapeake General Hospital.

HT relieves pain, reduces stress and improves self-esteem, mood and muscle tone.
If you do not have a healing garden--start one in the Spring. Or get involved in a community garden in your area. The Horticultural Therapy Partnership (HTP) website, designed by the Horticultural Society of New York to advance the practice of using horticulture for therapeutic purposes.

Organizations interested in developing or enhancing their own horticultural therapy programs, as well as individuals working in the field of horticultural therapy, are invited to download and use the four curriculum guides on this site. These guides provide practical information for using horticulture to impact four specific populations: individuals with mental illness, inmates in prison settings, at-risk youth, and inner-city children. The guides are intended to serve in a wide range of settings, including hospitals, rehabilitation centers, mental health facilities, development and vocational centers, assisted living centers and nursing homes, adult day care and senior centers, prisons, and homeless shelters.

The guides were developed by the Hort staff and field-tested on urban garden and farm projects undertaken in collaboration with social service agency partners. These partners and other organizations are part of the HTP formed in 2007 by The Hort to share best practices in horticultural therapy

SEPTEMBER 10, 2012 DAIRY PRODUCTS

“Letting go doesn't mean that you don't care about someone anymore. It's just realizing that the only person you really have control over is yourself.”

― Deborah Reber, Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul

No one has control of you except yyourself.  You have to take control. No one has the right to take control over your life, unless you let them. Letting go is a very loose term. Sometimes it just means taking a break. We all need breaks. It doesn't mean you do not care or love them anyone, it just means you might need a little free time for yourself. There is nothing wrong with that . Do not feel guilty over that.

There are many reasons people consume fewer dairy products or avoid them altogether. Most of the time the individual doesn't relate their bloating, flatulence and changes in stool to their dairy consumption. The younger generation consumes more soda or pop by 300% over the past 50 years. Some avoid dairy because of the advice from their health care practitioner, or because of a history of kidney stones, calcium deposits in joints or bothersome skin conditions that can be related to dairy. Dairy as it exists today is very inflammatory. Some have to avoid dairy due to lactose intolerance. Lactose is the sugar found in milk that gets broken down in the small intestine into two simple sugars (glucose and galactose) which are then absorbed by the brush border of the small intestines. There is a normal physiologic decline in the absorption of milk as we get older. This is a lactase (the enzyme which breaks down lactose) deficiency, called lactase non-persistence. There is a difference in lactose intolerance and lactase non-persistence. Most patients who have celiac disease or non celiac gluten sensitivity, also have an underlying dairy intolerance.

If you avoid dairy you must make sure you get the proper supplementation of minerals that are found in dairy. You need to still get the adequate calcium and magnesium levels, and do not forget the trace minerals as manganese, zinc, selenium and copper. Calcium is critical to bone health.

I agree with avoiding dairy as it exists today. Make sure you eat spinach for calcium, bananas and avocados for potassium, eggs for vitamin A (organic eggs), canned sardines and salmon (from http://www.vitalchoice.com/) for B12 and Vitamin D, almonds for riboflavin and (if not allergic) cooked soybeans for magnesium. There are alternatives to milk in the way of other foods.  There are some children who are allergic to eggs. The question I ask Is it the eggs? or is it the soy meal that the chickens are being fed? Most egg allergies could actually be a soy allergy.

You can eat other dairy as in sheep or goat. I would also suggest raw dairy. To be informed about raw dairy join http://www.westonaprice.org/

THE QUESTION IS - TO BE OR NOT TO BE A DAIRY CONSUMER

SEPTEMBER 7, 2012 AN ORGANIC RELATIONSHIP

Do you shop in Whole Foods? or Trader Joe's ? Do you buy organic fruits and vegetables?
How do you know it really is organic ? For the last 13 years the United States sales for organic foods has increased from 3.6 to more than 25 billion dollars.

Although organic certification and farming practices vary, there is a consistency of what is organic. Do you what organic is? Organic foods are generally grown without  synthetic fertilizers, or pesticides or any routine use of antibiotics and growth hormones.
This sounds great. I must thank individuals as Michael Pollan, Andrew Weil, Deepok Chopra, Dr Oz, Oprah Winfrey and others in the field . These individuals and many more have made America aware. If have not ever read The Omnivore Dilemma by Michael Pollan--I would suggest it ( as a registered herbalist I love The Botany of Desire)

In reviewing conventional literature, I found an interesting review in The Annals of Internal Medicine September 4 2012. This is a great publication of the American College of Physicians. The purpose of this study was to review evidence comparing the health effects of organic and conventional foods.
Large databases were used.( 7 in all)  One example is Med line from 1966 to May 2011.

I recommend this Review. Ann Intern Med 2012;157:348-366.
Let me sum up their findings: Their conclusion was that the published literature LACKS strong evidence that organic foods are significantly more nutritious than conventional foods. The consumption of organic foods may reduce exposure to pesticide residues and antibiotic resistant bacteria.

Now what ? More needs to be studied. Do we buy organic ? Not always. Rick buys from the local farmers . He does love both Whole Foods and Trader Joe's.  Organic is not affordable to everyone. In today's economic and financial crisis, it is definitely better than four years ago, but there is no perfection. I have many patients who do buy organic foods. I know it is better, but how much better ? I tell my patients, do the best you can do- pick and chose your battles.

I love the way I practice medicine. To me, it is the paint to the canvas. Yesterday I had my usual busy day. When the front desk told me there was a call from VNS Hospice, I sighed and picked up the phone. My dear friend/patient Patricia had passed away . Patricia was one of the first patients I started to treat. She followed my course of life. By this  I mean, she always moved with me when I changed practices and locations. She never left my side. She used to follow the advice of Carlton Fredricks. She sat with Carol every Monday for years in one of the treatment rooms. My father and Patricia sat and laughed in the office. She was part of my extended family. She saw my children grow up in my practice. She attended both Rick's and my 50th Birthday. We even had some holidays together. I loved sending her hand made cards.I will still make a Halloween card for her this year.
She was a real trouper I know she is in a better place with no suffering , no pain and no oxygen tanks. I will miss her. I love you, my fallen angel

SEPTEMBER 6, 2012 FOODS FOR PROSTATE HEALTH

" Forgiveness is a virtue of the brave " - I. Gandhi

Have I been perfect about forgiveness ? No. Have I meditated and prayed on forgiveness ? Yes Since I know there is no perfection I accept my character defects or flaws and continually work on them. I am a work in progress at 50 plus years. I am grateful to say that. I forget and forgive. I pray for those that have harmed me in any way. I realize that those individuals need more prayers.

Prostate health is of concern of every male patient, particular over the age of 50. The standard test is the PSA ( probably over utilized) followed up by a trans rectal ultrasound of the prostate. The three basic prostate conditions are prostatitis, benign prostate hypertrophy and prostate cancer.
One point to remember is that PSA screening  results in little or no reduction in prostate cancer specific mortality and may be associated with problems  related to subsequent evaluation and treatments

There are excellent supplements, minerals and herbs for prostate support. Some of the herbs as saw palmetto has been studied by the National Institute of Health ( NIH) There are also excellent food sources for prostate health. Other than saw palmetto the two herbs I utilize are stinging nettles ( Urtica dioica) and Pygeum africanum. I do utilize a product by Herbal Vitality called Prostate Formula which has those two herbs and much more.

Is there a way to promote prostate health using foods ? Yes, there is.
1. Eat sardines, salmon mackerel and trout for Omega 3s
2. Consume almonds and walnuts ( good oils) Pumpkin seeds are useful for the prostate
3. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables especially berries, spinach and bell peppers ( all are high in their anti oxidant potential)
4. Obtain resveratrol from red wine and grapes ( use in small doses as both increase blood sugar levels)
5, Lycopene containing foods include tomato juice, tomato paste, and tomato sauce. Watermelon is an excellent source of lycopene ( but watermelons have a high glycemic index - or high sugar levels)
6. Ti get selenium eat Brazil nuts, brown rice and fresh fish
7. Eat avocados, nuts , pumpkin seeds and peas for Vitamin E
8. For trace elements as zinc, manganese, and copper eat leafy green vegetables
9. Drink green tea

It is not always necessary to take vitamins and supplements if you eat a well balanced diet

There are some dietary restrictions that are a NO for prostate health
These are animal fats, polyunsaturated fats as corn or canola oil, and of course trans fats. It has been studied that high calcium containing foods, and flax seed oils stimulate prostate cells. There also is a study that high dose zinc is anti-prostate ( meaning not helpful)

SEPTEMBER 5, 2012 SEPTEMBER FLOWER

"  When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive -- to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love. "- Marcus Aurelius

This has been my morning mantra for more than 10 years. It keeps me grounded. It allows me to calm my thoughts about all those I care for as a physician/ healer. Being alive is a privilege . Being healthy with the ability to think, act, breathe and love is a greater privilege

What do you think of when you hear " Morning Glory" Did you know that this is the September Flower ? Do you think of the Katherine Hepburn flower ? Do you think of a sweet potato ?  Do you think of the ' morning glory' pool at Yellowstone National Park ?

There are 1000 or more species of morning glory. There are approximately 650 climbing  or shrubbery, temperate or tropical species comprise the genus Ipomoea ( Family Convolvulaceae)
Most morning glory flowers unravel into full bloom in the early morning. The flowers usually start to fade a few hours before the "petals" start showing visible curling. They prefer full solar exposure throughout the day, and mesic soils. Some morning glories, such as Ipomoea muricata, are night-blooming flowers. Most of you are familiar with the I tricolor, or the Heavenly Blue and still more are familiar with the I.alba, the fragrant moon flower that opens at night. This is the one that I am most drawn to. The calyces's of the moon flower can be eaten and used as a curry.
There are species of morning glory that can be eaten. I batatas is a commonly eaten morning glory family throughout the world. It is commonly known as the sweet potato. The sweet potato is a dicotyledonous plant that belongs to the family Convolvulaceae. Its large, starchy, sweet-tasting, tuberous roots are an important root vegetable. The young leaves and shoots are sometimes eaten as greens

It also has been used medically for thousands of years. It does taste delicious, and has less sugar than a white potato. It has been used for burns, asthma and bug bites.

One cup of sweet potatoes contains many amino acids, protein, vitamins and supplements. Some of these include tyrosine, valine, methionine, carotene, Vitamin C, folate, B vitamins and numerous minerals
A sweet potato should be your vegetable at least three times per week.

You should try Patrick and Gina Neely's  recipe.. Twice Baked Sweet Potato. Also Rick makes a great tasty sweet potato- I had one last night

Until tomorrow....

SEPTEMBER 4, 2012 THE BEE SONG

Oh what a glorious thing to be,
A healthy grown up busy busy bee,
Whiling away
The passing hours
Pinching all the pollen
From the cauliflow'rs.
I'd like to be a busy little bee,
Being just as busy as a bee can be,
Flying round the garden
Brightest ever seen,
Taking back the honey
To the dear old queen.

Oh what a glorious thing to be,
A healthy grown up busy busy bee,
Toying with the tulips,
Tasting ev'ry type,
Building up the honeycomb
That looks like tripe.
I'd like to be a busy little bee,
Being just as busy as a bee can be,
Flying all around
In the wild hedgerows,
Stinging all the cows
Upon the parson's nose.

Oh what a glorious thing to be,
A healthy grown up busy busy bee,
Visiting the picnics,
Quite a little tease,
Raising little lumps
Upon the maidens' knees.
I'd like to be a busy little bee
Being just as busy as a bee can be,
Flirting with the butterfly
Strong upon the wing.
Whoopee! O death
Where is thy sting?

Oh what a glorious thing to be,
A healthy grown up busy busy bee,
To be a good bee
One must contrive,
For bees in a beehive
Must behive.
But maybe I wouldn't be a bee,
Bees are all right when alive, you see,
But when bees die
You really should see 'em,
Pinned on a card
In a dirty museum.

Bz bz bz bz, honey bee, honey bee,
Bz if you like but don't sting me.
Bz bz bz bz, honey bee, honey bee,
Bz if you like but don't sting me.

I didn't write this , but I wish I had. This was written by a British comedian named Arthur Askey in the 1950's It is called The Bee Song. After researching I do not know if it was written by Askey as I found the lyrics from 1938 by Kenneth Blain. There are 551 published songs with the word 'honey bee' in the title.
Here are some:
1.Tom  Petty - Honey Bee' from Wildflowers 2002
2. Johnny Lee Hooker ' Queen Bee' 1951
3. The Lanman Brothers- " Do the Honey Bee' 2009
4. Zee Avi - " Do the Honey Bee" 2009
5. The Birtds and the Bees - Jewel Atkens 1965

I couild sit and imagine the author of the song writing it as he observed the bees from his own hive. Who knows ?

Until tomorrow...
