OCTOBER 1, 2010 THE MUSIC OF THE SOUL
"Words make you think a thought. Music makes you feel a feeling. A song makes you feel a thought.”
E.Y. Harburg
“Music is a fair and glorious gift from God. I am strongly persuaded that after theology there is no art than can be placed on a level with music; for besides theology, music is the only art capable of affording peace and joy of the heart.”
Martin Luther
"Music is so important. It changes thinking, it influences everybody, whether they know it or not. Music knows no boundary lines."
Irving Berlin
“Music is a moral law. It gives soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, a charm to sadness, gaiety and life to everything; It is the essence of order and lends to all that is good, just, and beautiful.”
Plato
Which quote resonates with you? The composer/lyricist, the ancient philosopher or the humanitarian/civil rights leader all talk about music in different ways. I love them all.
I believe that every happy moment and every disappointment has a song. Listen to the lyrics of certain songs. Have the melody and the music humming in your mind. Sometimes the lyrics of a song will help you grasp the true nature of your pain. I am sure you have heard that each of us have right brain and left brain functions. The left brain is for the logical and rational ability. The right and left brain work with each other. The left brain can only add onto existing structures. All of us depend on our left brain especially when we are faced with problems. The right brain is the part of your brain where you get sudden clarity of a situation, insights into the problems, and realizations that you are not the problem. The right brain is silent unlike the left brain.
The right brain remembers a part of the dream, remembers a name when it has slipped from you, and comforts you with the music that is in your soul.
I have used different types of herbs for cough. One of those herbs is ginger. The other is Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara).
Coltsfoot is a member of the daisy family. Maybe this is why I like it so much . Both the flowers and the leaves are used. The Coltsfoot herb is also know as Assfoot, Coughwort, Horsehoof, British Tobacco, Bullsfoot, and Fieldhove. Coltsfoot herb is a perennial that looks a lot like a dandelion. It is a common wild plant and grows to the height of 4 to 10 inches. It has long hoof shaped leaves (some describe them as kidney shaped) and light yellow flowers. You will commonly find this plant along roadsides and in open areas. I know I have photos of Coltfoot from Ithaca. It is native to Europe and Asia, but has become naturalized in North America.
This herb is traditionally used in the form of tea, but also appears in over-the-counter formulas for colds and congestion. It contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids that can seriously damage the liver and one study concluded that the flower buds are carcinogenic. Due to these alkaloids the governing bodies consider it very unsafe. In Europe and the United States, many practitioners still use the Coltsfoot herb routinely on a short term basis to treat coughs and other respiratory ailments.
I have used it only for coughs and bronchitis, but I do know some herbalists who have used it for whoopping cough ( pertussis). Externally it can be applied to the skin for the treatment of burns. Coltsfoot has many actions: Expectorant, demulcent, anti-inflammatory, anti-spasmodic anti-tussive, tonic, and anti-catarrhal.
I have combined it with mullein for the treatment of coughs and with echinacea for bronchitis.

COME RAIN OR COME SHINE -
Harold Arlen/ Johnny Mercer
I'm gonna love you, like nobody's loved you
Come rain or come shine
High as a mountain, deep as a river
Come rain or come shine
I guess when you met me
It was just one of those things
But don't you ever bet me
'Cause I'm gonna be true if you let me
You're gonna love me, like nobody's loved me
Come rain or come shine
We'll be happy together, unhappy together
Now won't that be just fine
The days may be cloudy or sunny
We're in or out of the money
But I'm with you always
I'm with you rain or shine
