AUGUST 9 , 2012 MAGNESIUM SALTS

" TRULY LOVING ANOTHER MEANS LETTING GO OF EXPECTATIONS. "

' WE LOVE BECAUSE IT'S THE ONLY TRUE ADVENTURE'  - nikki giovanni

Love is truly the only true adventure in life. I am on that adventure for more than ten years. It has been one of the best adventures I have ever been on. Part of it is the letting go of expectations, but the other part is the person I am in love with. We all need the right person to love. In order to find that ' someone' is first to love yourself. This is called self-love.

Magnesium as a dietary supplement is widely used among health care practitioners as well as the general public. There are many different salt types of magnesium. Our body does need magnesium. It is vital for bones, cell membrane health as well as a multitude of metabolic reactions.
Through years of clinical use, I have a basic fundamental knowledge of this element. As a salt there are many types. The adult human body, 70 kg contains about 25 grams of magnesium with most being found in the human skeleton, and the rest distributed in the muscle. The three types of muscles include smooth, skeletal and cardiac ( the only organ having cardiac muscle is the human heart)

Without getting into the biochemistry of magnesium, it is essential for the active transport of other elements or ions in the body, especially potassium and calcium. These three - magnesium, calcium and potassium ( and yes sodium) is needed for all actions of the body. The movement of a single finger or your left arm requires conduction of nerve fibers, muscle contractions  and the coordination of your heart rhythm ( the heart)

It is complex. Most of us , take below the RDA requirements of magnesium. There is possibly 25% of all individuals who take above the RDA requirements., I am on of those individuals, along with many of my patients.

As with other minerals, the intestinal absorption decreases with age. Intestinal absorption of other minerals and vitamins can be affected by food allergies ( especially dairy, gluten, and yeast products), other heavy metal intoxication including mercury, lead, cadmium, and aluminium, as well as chronic infections as Lyme Disease, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome ( EBV or CMV) infections, Hepatitis B and C and systemic candidiasis ( overgrowth of yeast)

So which magnesium do you take ?
For what purpose do you take magnesium for ?  Do you take it for constipation which is the most common condition . It is used as  a laxative and antacid.  Those types typically used are magnesium citrate, sulfate and hydroxide. The most beneficial is magnesium is the sulfate version. In the past I have used magnesium oxide, but sulfate is better.

For the 'gastric upset' or ' dyspepsia' or ' reflux' - the best and most effective is magnesium hydroxide. It is the fastest of all the magnesium salts, yet I see many products on the health care store shelves use magnesium carbonate. This is the slowest.

I have seen a study using magnesium salts ( magnesium hydroxide) at 300mg in fibromyalgia. In some patients I use magnesium in a patients intravenous antioxidants. This dose went up to 600mg  for another four weeks. In conclusion there was significant decreases int he severity of the pain.

Other diseases where magnesium salts can be used ( some with studies) are hearting loss, migraines, diabetes, kidney stones, valvular heart disease, and memory disorders ( cognitive function)

Until tomorrow...
