DECEMBER 13, 2010 DO WE NEED ANOTHER BLACKOUT ?

" Take less for granted and you will become very busy enjoying all that you have."

I take nothing for granted any longer. I used to. During the New York City blackout in 2003, I was prepared. The Northeast Blackout of 2003 was a massive widespread power outage that occurred throughout parts of the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and Ontario, Canada on Thursday, August 14, 2003, at approximately 4:11 p.m. EDT (UTC-04) . At the time, it was the second most widespread electrical blackout in history, after the 1999 Southern Brazil blackout. The blackout affected an estimated 10 million people in Ontario and 45 million people in eight U.S. states.
The prior NYC blackout was in 1977, and I distinctly remember backpacking across Europe with my brother. I was in Venice on that Friday- July 13, 1977. I believe it was also the day Elvis Presley died.
We do as a society take too much for granted - the electricity, the water, etc. A blackout checked some of into reality. Not that we should have another one, but it does effect how we all think about daily life. What do you take for granted?
Do you take your spouse/partner and even your parents for granted? Living life int he wild using nature for food is a unique way to experience all that Mother Nature has to offer. Try camping. I haven't done it in a while but did enjoy it as a Boy Scout. I would try it again. One of my dreams...yet to be fulfilled.
Make a list of what you take for granted. Analyze , read and most of all, try to change what you take for granted.

America is fixated on cholesterol, especially the bad cholesterol (LDL). The normal ranges change from year to year. Currently the upper limits of normal for the LDL are 100. If the patient has already known coronary artery disease (CAD), some physicians want their LDL cholesterol (LDL) at a level less than 70. Do you know your TRIGLYCERIDE level or High Density Lipoprotein Level (HDL- good cholesterol)
The triglyceride level is determined by the amount of carbohydrates you consume. The higher the triglyceride level (TG) the lower your good cholesterol (HDL)
This is called an inverse ratio.

Today, it is not about the number. It is about what is the particle size of your bad as well as your good cholesterol.
Therefore you could have a bad cholesterol (LDL) of 110 which is adequate, but the particle size is small instead of large. This LDL would cause atherosclerosis whereas a LDL ( bad) of 150 with large particles will not cause a problem.

Have you had your particle size of your cholesterol checked lately ? Ask your doctor to do a VAP or NMR test on your cholesterol.

There are many botanicals that can lower your total cholesterol as well as your bad (LDL) cholesterol. I use Green tea ( Camellia ) and garlic ( Allium ) I also use Red rice yeast.

If you see a conventional cardiologist you most likely will be prescribed a statin drug. Statin drugs , as lipitor, zocor or pravachol, inhibit cholesterol synthesis through an inhibition of the enzyme, HMG coreductase.
If you decide to use red rice yeast, your cardiologist might have a problem. To legally document you using red rice yeast he/she might write the following:

"He/She has hypercholesterolemia which he/she is treating with red rice yeast despite the current warnings about the potential renal ( kidney) toxic contamination of this formulation and the variability of bioavailability of the active agent ."

The above statement is to protect the doctor, since you are refusing to take the statin therapy. Yes there is current research on red rice yeast and different formulations. I doubt that the cardiologist knows enough about each red rice yeast product. I wouldn't buy Red Rice yeast from the local vitamin shop, but instead at a quality Health Care Viatmin Shop.
I also use plant sterols and guggulipids with the red rice yeast. I have been using low dose cerstor especially if the patient has a bad, bad particle LDL. I prefer crestor more than the other studies as I have seen a particle reduction. You need not take the statin every day. Please consult your health care practitioner before making any changes.

For those taking garlic:
Garlic is available as follows:
1. Garlic bulbs - a piece of hazelnut two to three times a day. Be prepared for garlic breath
2. Garlic tincture - 15 - 20 drops three times daily
3. Garlic capsules -find those products which dissolve only in the intestines to avoid the smell of garlic

Dosage always varies - 10 - 25g of the whole herb.

Until tomorrow...
