MARCH 21, 2011 YOUR HERBAL GARDEN

"LIVE AS IF YOU WERE TO DIE TOMORROW and LEARN AS IF YOU WERE TO LIVE FOREVER."- Gandhi

I try to live each day to the fullest but sometimes Life gets in the way. I remember each day to embrace "Life on Life's terms". Life is sometimes like a roller coaster. I have certainly been on the ride of my life. I have endured it through prayer and meditation. I sometimes reflect on my life 30 years ago. I know I was not sober at that time. So I had problems. I still have problems today. But who doesn't? If someone says they have no problems in their life, then something is wrong. They might not have big problems, but part of life is to have problems. This way you can learn from them and not make the same mistakes again and again. I am constantly learning. I love to learn. I learn from my mistakes. I learn from other people. I learn from prayer and meditation. I learn from 12 step meetings. I learn from patients. I learn from my partner. I learn from my children. I learn from listening to my heart. I learn from books. I want to learn as if I were to live forever.

One of the great advantages of using herbs for health and healing is their relative safety. I have been using herbs for myself and my patients for more than fifteen years. I know plants/herbs are safer than pharmaceuticals, but I do caution patients that higher doses of an herb are not always safe. Exploring how to use herbs has been one of the greatest gifts bestowed upon me.

I have learned that some herbs need a little more caution than others. This does not mean these herbs are not used. I use all herbs I am familiar with. There are only a very few that I have not used. I am sure if a patient ate too much black licorice, a problem would arise. If a patient had too much theobroma (chocolate) there would be a problem.

Do you think if caffeine was a drug that the FDA would approve it? I think not, but you never know. As I read Sauer's Herbal Cures, I am amazed at the many side effects he mentions for certain herbs. It seems that nausea and vomiting are possible with just about any herb.

Today with the NIH and the NCI doing more studies on herbs, there is less negative press about herb use. I do know that if you are pregnant you should avoid large quantities of herbs, especially those herbs with aspirin-like qualities like white willow bark (Salix ssp.)

Are you motivated to use herbs? Are you motivated enough to start growing them in a small pots or in a small area of your garden? Go to the garage, get out the spade and hoe and turn a small area into an herb garden. Get high quality seeds. I use http://www.botanicalinterests.com/

You will be empowered by your garden--I promise you. Herb seeds are easy to grow and can be enjoyed indoors and out! Whether you're looking for classic herb seeds, organic herb seeds, or you are ready to explore new flavors, you'll find plenty of fun and flavorful herb seeds for sale.

Until tomorrow...
